For lovers of history, religious devotion and nature, Varasova – the imposing mountain that rises next to the sea – hides one of the most impressive treasures of our region. Also known as the “Holy Mountain” of Aitoloakarnania, Varasova was a great ascetic center during the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods, hosting dozens of monks in its steep caves.

Today, visiting the cave monasteries is a unique experience that combines hiking with historical exploration:

The Cave of Agios Nikolaos: The most famous and impressive complex, built inside a huge cave. It is an entire walled monastery with ruins of cells, a temple, auxiliary areas and a defensive tower, which transports the visitor back to the 10th century.

Panagia Enklestistra: Another captivating hermitage nestled in the rocks, which testifies to the isolation and faith of the ascetics who lived there.

Landscape of Unparalleled Beauty: The route offers captivating views of the Gulf of Patras, where the wild, bare limestone rock of the mountain meets the vast blue of the sea.

Why visit:
Whether you are a hiking and climbing enthusiast (as Varasova is a world-renowned climbing destination), or you want to feel the mystical energy of a place that has remained unchanged over the centuries, a tour of these caves will be unforgettable.

Tip for our visitors: Access to some caves (such as Agios Nikolaos) is either via a hiking trail from Kato Vasiliki or more easily by boat from the sea. Ask us during your stay so we can give you all the necessary instructions for the route!
